King Gizz reviews day 1/26! Today's album is 12 Bar Bruise!
12 Bar Bruise is a glimpse into what King Gizzard would later become in some ways, but it is a much less refined sound than they would come to have. This is a result of the band's nature at this time, less of a solid lineup and more of a revolving door collective of rock musicians in the underground scene in Melbourne Australia, leading to a very loose and fun feeling. Overall, 12 Bar Bruise is a great example of a well made first album, and amazing for what it is. I will rate it a solid 7/10.
tldr; it's fuzzy garage rock and doesn't reflect their current style, but is worth a listen anyway.
King Gizz reviews day 2/26! Today's album is Eyes Like The Sky!
Eyes Like The Sky is a short story written by Broderick Smith. The album is a musical accompaniment to Broderick reading this story, and it is certainly not for everybody, but I quite enjoy it. The story itself is about a white man who was abandoned as an infant and taken in by a Native American tribe, and is named Eyes Like The Sky for his bright blue eyes. I won't spoil the story, I think you should experience it yourself. The album is overall quite enjoyable, but because King Gizz revisited the musical audiobook format later to much greater effect, I will rate it a 6/10. Rest in peace, Broderick Smith, Feb. 17, 1948 - Apr. 30, 2023.
tldr; spaghetti western audiobook set to music, absolute banger
King Gizz reviews day 3/26! Today's album is Float Along -- Fill Your Lungs!
Float Along -- Fill Your Lungs is King Gizzard's first full trek into real psychedelic rock. This album is made up of long jammy passages filled with reverb-soaked guitar, beautiful vocals, and droning sitar. This album is a masterclass in creating a vibe. King Gizz never ventured this far into psych again, but this album is good enough to make up for that. Float Along is a masterpiece, and I don't think there is much that could make it better. 8/10.
tldr; sitar is so sexy yall
King Gizz reviews day 4/26! Today's album is Oddments!
Oddments is probably the most lo-fi Gizz album, and to great effect. There are more than a handful of great love songs on this album, and the album overall was just used as a way to release the songs the members felt wouldn't fit on another album. One song in particular, Work This Time, is their most popular song of all time, and Joey's guitar solos on the live recordings of the track are absolutely amazing. In Oddments the boys established themselves as not just a fun rock group, but genuinely prolific and talented songwriters. It may not be too organized or consistent, but it is worth listening to. 7/10.
tldr; listen to Work This Time live in Nashville '24
